In the 50’s - 70’s, a female model had to be around 6 foot and around 6-8 stone, even at the ages of 30 and 40. Men were 5ft 9” or over, and maintained a steady ‘masculine’ weight. And of course, |

you had to be beautiful. The reason for this was that fashion manufacturers made dress and suit samples in only one size - and it was easier (and expected) to find a model in that size than to make a sample in a different size. As the plus and petit sizes arrived, super models and varied sizes came on the scene, this rule changed somewhat. At the same time, the ‘fashion’ look for a season changed as to what was being considered beautiful at the time. When it comes to commercial modelling, size, look and age can vary immensely. In a secondary market, the more you can vary your look rather than having ‘a’ look, the better your chances are of finding work.
Ultimately, it comes down to three things:
- The right look that someone needs (generally the Client) for the assignment they are working on at that time.
- Good clear photographs which represent you in the most professional way possible.
- The correct, positive, attitude to your agency is presented just as well to the Client who may make an enquiry about you after looking at your pictures.
All of these are entirely imperative. Having the right look does not mean you are that stereotypical model, we work with Clients who request models for adverts on television, poster campaigns, promotional staff, photographic for photo shoots, magazine work, TV extra, Catwalk etc, etc. Even for Catwalk - they need models of all ages and sizes for shows and events. Whatever the assignment, it is knowing what to do and how to market yourself (other than what we do for you as an agency) that is important. When a Client calls us for someone attractive to stand next to a new product, the person who can constantly look good in front of the camera, show the emotional expression that is needed on cue, show up on time and leave on time and in so many other ways make the show go quickly, efficiently and successfully, is the person who will get the job. This is also the model who will be requested to go back again. This is how you become a professional model.
It’s important to note that politeness, efficiency, presentation and punctuality are all duly noted and remembered. If you try to imagine you are going for an interview for a very well paid job and it is the career you have been working toward for so long.

It is guaranteed that even if dont you have the experience another applicant has, if that Client instantly warms to you and likes you - they will picture themselves working with you and you could get the job.
