Your first
Catwalk assignment! Those who might not know much about modelling, often think the word modelling means mainly - catwalk, however, there are lots of other areas of work. |
| For
some models catwalk modelling can be one of the most daunting type of work
for this precise reason. Your purpose as a catwalk model is to display the
designers clothes to whoever is there watching. In turn you will be getting
a really good opportunity to get good exposure and future bookings possibly
with top clients! If you have your first catwalk assignment coming up shortly, whether big or small have a read through these basic tips: 1 No matter how many butterflies you have, act confident. I’m not saying to be arrogant either, just have faith in yourself. Moaning to every one backstage about how nervous you are, is not going to help them nor yourself as you will probably end up feeling worse! 2 When on the catwalk your eyes should be focused straight ahead of you. Looking off into the distance. If you look at the sea of people in front, it may make you more nervous, so it can help to just focus on one person. However most find it best to just find something on the back wall and focus on it. Don’t be silly enough to focus on any of the bright lights that will be pointed towards you. It has been done before with obvious consequences of not seeing the end of the catwalk! 3 Your chin should be positioned a little downwards, this is because everyone is below you, seated and looking up at you. In addition, photographers will be taking pictures aimed up at you. So for your exposure aspect, you want to have good pictures taken of you so that they can be reused in magazines. 4 Shoulders shouldn’t move, they should stay still as you walk. Avoid hunching over. Stand straight up with your shoulders square and back. 5 This tip takes a bit of practise: On the catwalk your arms should only swing as much as your body makes them. |
For men - All you
need to do is just let them swing naturally. Don’t assist them at
all. |
that
in a picture it ends up looking like you have no fingers!! It appears is
if they have been cropped off and can really spoil the picture when every
thing else looked great! So remember to have your hands open with your fingers nearly totally straightened. Not totally straight (you don’t want to look like a robot), but out enough to be visible. Then you’ll make great pictures! 7 Our walk varies depending on our gender. Men walk taking longer strides, at least 3 feet between strides. Try to simply take long strides without looking unnatural (guys you have it easy!!) Women look good taking longer strides walking with one foot in front of the other. This causes your hips to sway, giving arms the swing I talked about earlier. This takes practise to make it flow and look elegant. Also think of pushing your hips forward a bit. It’s recommended to practise in a full length mirror. Don’t exaggerate the hip swinging, it will come naturally with the foot placing and the slightly forward location of the hips. Have fun! Instead of walking down the ramp thinking ‘oh no, how do I look’, focus on the positives, take in the atmosphere, the lights, the photographers, their clicking cameras and the applause. You have done well to get there, so make the best of it! Just remember, being a great model
all starts in your mind. The way YOU think and act is what makes the differenceHeather |
