Models Direct IS SUPPORTING a Department of Trade and Industry initiative which aims to protect wouldbe models from unscrupulous agents. After continued bad press about ‘casting sessions’ the DTI has issued proposals to protect what it calls ‘vulnerable’ workers. In a consultation document the DTI says: “There are cases where unscrupulous individuals hire a venue for very short periods, advertise in newspapers to invite would-be models to attend and then engage in hard sell tactics to persuade them or their parents to pay high fees on the promise of work that very rarely materialises.” The Government is considering a ban on the taking of fees during a casting session, and proposing the introduction of a seven-day ‘cooling off’ period after such events.	Models Direct is not directly affected by the proposed new legislation as it does not work in this way – its models provide their own photography. But CEO Damian O’Connor says he is fully behind any initiative which restores public confidence in the modelling and agency industry: “The biggest issue in terms of negative publicity and cause of concern is the charging of exorbitant fees, running into hundred of pounds, for the taking of photographs and linking them, however tenuously, with the business of becoming a model’.” The Government plans to produce ‘Top Tips’ to help would-be models spot the rogues, coupled with advice on getting into the industry. And Damian has agreed to publish this information in future issues of Image, as well as online.
