How to Make Your Beauty Routine Sustainable

Published: 17th May 2020

As health officials have advised us to stay safe from COVID-19 by staying at home to protect ourselves, others and the NHS, you might be on the hunt for useful hacks to keep yourself busy.

You’ll have more downtime to do the things that you might not have had the chance to do, so now’s the time to take a step back, be in the moment and explore opportunities whilst at home. Ever thought about sustainability? How could you make a difference to the earth by leaving a positive footprint?

Models Direct have put together five eco-friendly top tips for how you can make your beauty routine more sustainable this spring. Models – did you know that switching to eco-friendly products is much simpler than you think? We’ll show you how!

1, Choose products that come with sustainable packaging

When your favourite moisturiser runs out or you’re on the lookout for a new primer perhaps, check for products in packaging that is either recycled or is recyclable. Look out for products that utilise glass as opposed to plastic or use recycled waste to produce their packaging. Thanks to increased awareness about sustainability, this is one way to incorporate and follow an eco-friendly approach.

2, Reuse your packaging

Being sustainable means reusing your products, but don’t worry, that doesn’t mean we’ll ask you to water down your lotions and potions when they are almost finished! For this top tip, we are focusing on reusing packaging, where refill pack options are available. Topping up as opposed to buying a new pack is the way forward but this one would be best left till after the lockdown.

3, Recycle like a boss

We know that our models are always on the go and have busy schedules. If you have a recyclable product, make sure you actually recycle it – it would defeat the point otherwise. Hands up anyone who has fallen into this trap. If that’s you then try not to forget to pop your empty product into your recycling bin. If you don’t have one, it might be an idea to save all the empty containers you have – or as many as possible – until the nation’s lockdown is over. You can then take them to your local recycling hub.

4, Disposables are trouble

You’re probably aware that even though disposable products are designed for lifestyle convenience (models will know how handy they are after a long day’s work) they are not good for the environment. They don’t biodegrade so take years to breakdown in landfill. Opting for more earth-friendly products is the aim – items that can be reused again. How about swapping over to microfiber cloths that can be washed again and again?

5, Switch off your water

You’ll definitely know that handwashing is so imperative (as it always should have been). We’re being extra cautious and adhering to health advisors’ recommendations. But leaving the tap on in between tooth brushing, face scrubbing and shampooing will waste water so get into a good habit of turning off the tap, seeing to your beauty routine and then turning the tap back on.

6, Do your bit by choosing eco-friendly brands

Yes, it’s as simple as that! There are lots of companies out there that are taking a sustainable stance on board. Check out the following brands that offer vegan, SLS free, paraben-free alternatives. Neal’s Yard Remedies, Medik8, Soaper Duper and Burt’s Bees are some great examples.
