Spring forward!

The season is changing…and so is the fashion

Fashion trends change with clockwork regularity, and this spring is no exception. Catwalks may give clues to the season’s latest craze, but many offer impractical options which are over budget. Let Models Direct take you on a snapshot tour of some of this season’s must-be-seen-in fashion items. If you take our advice, you might even increase your modelling assignments.

For the ladies

1. Polka dots – Spring can’t come soon enough, and polka dots are making a roaring comeback. So what if April brings disappointment – polka dots are sure to liven up any gloom. Go dotty and wear them with pride.

2. Leather – Along with denim, this most versatile of materials is a staple of the fashion world, with predictions for 2020 claiming leather to be as fashionable as ever. Don’t be shy by sticking to the usual black, brown and beige colours; be bold and opt for sunshine colours, adding both a spark and a talking point to your day.

3. Trench coats – Coats? In spring? You heard us – trench coats are back in, and they’re here to stay for the year. With the threat of April showers (or throughout the entire summer) a reality, these knee-length beauties score highly in both the fashion and practicality stakes.

4. Oversize bags – Forget blasé Hollywood purses barely large enough to carry chihuahuas. This season, big bags are the accessory to be seen on your arm – and the bigger the better. Another plus is that you’re less likely to lose them in public!

5. Drawstrings – Rope belts and drawstrings are sure to be a hit this spring, and if you add a chic bucket hat to your collection, you’ll have all the makings of a perfect set-up.

For the gents

1. Neck-to-shoulder collars – Think Johnny Depp in Donnie Brasco, Joe Pesci in Goodfellas and…well, anyone in a gangster film. Large collars are back in, and they enhance any casual suit combo. Though there’s nothing wrong with the “disco trend”, it’s best to avoid wearing large collars with white suits – unless, of course, Saturday Night Fever is your favourite flick.

2. Denim – Another classic, obviously, but expect this iconic style to be flaunted even more on your local high street. Whether they’re slim jeans or a tight-fitting jacket, there’s always a place for denim in your wardrobe.

3. Tropical prints – You don’t have to be Magnum P.I. to look snazzy in a tropical shirt. Either cotton, rayon or polyester, men should be comfortable donning an Hawaiian shirt. N.B. They look pretty good beneath a casual suit, too.

4. Waistcoats – Less City banker and more casual indie fan, waistcoats are set to be extremely popular this spring. Leave the top button undone, wear with a pair of light-coloured loafers, and you’ll have everything nailed down for the spring.

5. Rugby shirts – The “thug’s game played by gentlemen” is as popular as it’s even been, with last year’s World Cup attracting record audiences. Don’t concern yourself with unflattering lateral stripes – there’s a rugby shirt for every gent. Just a word of warning: mud stains are not in fashion.
