5 Reasons You Should Avoid Wearing Make-up to Bed

Published: 30th Apr 2020

We all have our days where we’ve got the perfect make-up on, sitting on our skins so flawlessly that, well, it would be a shame to take it off so soon!

However, after a modelling assignment and with tiredness kicking in so fast that you don’t know what’s hit you, you wake up with your make-up all over your pillowcase. Sound familiar?

One time won’t hurt, right? After reading this though, you might think otherwise. Let’s explore the 5 reasons why you should avoid wearing make-up to bed (no matter how knackered you are!)

1, Clogged pores

Your T-zone – your forehead, nose and chin – has the most oil-secreting glands (known as the sebum which your skin naturally produces). However, if you’ve skipped a night of using make-up remover, then your nasty surprise might result in clogged up pores.

2, Goodbye lovely lashes

Think twice before hitting the sack with eyeliner and mascara on. Why? Because they can get into your eyes, making them feel irritated. Mascara can really clutch onto your lashes over time, making it tricky to remove it from your lashes. As a result, some of your precious lashes might fall out with the rubbing and removal of overnight mascara.

3, Inflamed eyelids

Sounds gross but inflamed eyelids can happen if you’ve left eyeshadow on overnight. The eyeshadow can clog the tiny oil glands and hair follicles on your eyelids, causing the sebaceous glands to become irritated. This is major, so next time you think your eyeshadow looks on point and it isn’t worth taking off for the night, think again.

4, Spotty breakouts

We all hate spots – they’re often painful, irritating to look at and can appear worse under make-up. Did you know that we naturally shed about 50 million skin cells a day and it’s mostly during the night that they renew? Well, there’s a fun fact for you but it’s not so fun when you’ve left your make-up on overnight trapping those dead skin cells along with dirt and sebum which could lead to nasty bacteria growing (ew!) You might have a field day with unsightly pus spots the next morning or two.

5, Lips don’t lie

Okay, so Shakira’s hit song is playing in our minds right now but on a serious note, leaving lipstick on overnight can do more harm than we’d like to think. How? Apart from munching on remnants of it whilst sleeping, it can clog the pores around your mouth causing blackheads. Imagine trying to remove them afterwards? Ouch!

The bottom line: wash it off ASAP!

Make-up removal is more important than we thought. Models Direct would recommend washing yours off as soon as your day is coming to an end. Sometimes it’s all too easy to forget or become slack about not doing it but the reality is that there are a number of skin problems that could arise. The question is, is it worth it? Our models would tell you that it most certainly isn’t and keeping up a good skincare routine with consistent make-up removal is vital for healthy skin.
