Have you ever considered registering your child for commercial modelling? What questions or concerns did you have before getting started?

Children have so much to give, and many of them take a lot from parents, too! Supportive parents will always do what’s best for their children, no matter what age they are.

For anything educational or work-related, safety is also always the priority. Parents just want their children to be happy, and a little success goes a long way to self-respect and happiness that could cement their life in adult years.

So, it’s obvious that parents can influence their children by making some good decisions in their early stages.

If parents think that their child has something to give commercial modelling, they shouldn’t keep rose-tinted glasses on for too long. Sure, parents may be biased, and that bias could be pretty accurate. However, they also must be pragmatic. No one should lecture parents on how to raise their little ones, but we can give the right advice to parents wishing to register their child with modelling agencies. That we can do.

With that in mind, here are Models Direct’s essential tips for parents:

1. Always meticulously research modelling agencies, or indeed any enterprise you wish your child to be involved in. Not all agencies are the same. Some will have different values and responsibilities, and different goals. Some specialise in child models, some do not. Some charge for portfolios or photos, others do not (for example, we don’t). Some that do charge for photos could be a “showcase agency”, with no intention of ever trying to find work for models. So please wary, and aware.

2. Read an agency’s reviews thoroughly. It’s any business’s best interests to promote only good reviews, but all reviews should be genuine, and it’ll give you a fair idea of modelling works at that agency.

3. Be aware of agencies with no landline phone number, or a permanent address. Some might be operating purely from a website. Any model – potential or otherwise – can contact us or arrange a personal meeting to discuss anything they want clarifying.

4. Ask if the brands (clients) an agency works with are vetted. We vet all the brands we place our models with.

5. Bear in mind that UK children need a performance licence that can be issued by your local council.

6. We insist that all parents / guardians attend any child’s modelling job.

Modelling is extremely enjoyable, but we understand if parents or guardians have questions about how any agency operates. For more, information, please have a read here, or simply pick up the phone and give us a bell.
