If you’re preparing for your very first modelling assignment, then congratulations! Not doubt you followed the initial steps of registration and read up a little about how we operate and the brands we work with. No models can expect results without putting in a little effort in, and especially by not keeping your Models Direct portfolios up-to-date.

But all debut models deserve a pat on the back for being selected b y one of our clients.  And why not? They obviously liked what they saw on your portfolio, so that’s progress that needs to be recognised.

Let’s get down to the nitty gritty: being on set for the first time, and what to do in the days before your first modelling job.

On set

Don’t be late. Unless there’s an unavoidable traffic problem or last-minute emergency, there’s no excuse. Aim to arrive about 15 minutes early just to settle in. Our clients will notice – and appreciate it.

Nerves are normal but try to banish them. Be confident without being aloof or arrogant.

Be polite and attentive. Listen to what the photographer or filmmaker says and be as professional as you can. Whatever the shoot involves, no one expects you to nail it first time. Take in everything and enjoy the experience. You’ve been picked because your look is perfect for the job – never forget that.

Looking to hire models?

The time should fly by. Being emersed in a modelling shoot is exhilarating, and the anticipation of looking at the final product is one that all models yearn for – whether it’s a first-time job or whether they’ve picked for numerous assignments.

Ask questions on set, but don’t swamp the professionals you work with.

Before the day / arrival

Read up about the client you’re working with. Models represent us, but they also represent the client.

Double check travel arrangements.

Have the client’s contact name and phone at the ready should any teething problems occur prior to your arrival.

Check what type of clothes you should wear or take with you (we’re always available to advise). Often, our models can arrive in smart casual clobber and may be required to wear a uniform or branded clothes, which will be provided by the client on the day.

Make sure your phone is charged, and take a charger just be sure.

Taking some cosmetic essentials never go amiss.

Check the weather forecast and dress accordingly.

Have a decent breakfast – preferably one that releases energy slowly (food is usually available on set, but you don’t want to be distracted by an empty stomach mid-morning).

…and relax. Don’t rush, be excited, and do your best…which will never be in doubt!
