Perhaps one of the best things about working for Models Direct is delivering the news that one of our well-known clients has picked a debut model.

We know that securing that first modelling assignments doesn’t just happen overnight. Some models really do get chosen soon after registering with us, and we wish that could be the case for all our modelling talent.

However, breaking into the modelling industry is not always that easy, of course. We must stress that we’re referring to the commercial modelling industry, not the “high end” fashion modelling side of the business, as commercial modelling is very different (we’re positive most of readers know this already, if they’ve done their research and read our fantastic blogs.

We could give new models an entire thesis on what they should know if they have hopes and dreams of working with us and the brands that trust us to provide the right modelling talent. These hopes and dreams could easily become reality, as so many of our talent already know.

But let’s just focus on the essential points that any debutant model needs to read. These will give newcomers the best chance of being chosen by brands that need models all the time – we have many new openings every week across the UK.

Choosing the right modelling employment agency is any newcomer’s big decision. Finding the right one can be a Godsend. Any reputable agency has companies – both global ones and start-ups – on their books, having forged solid relationships over time. A decent agency will always provide tips and advice, and they’ll be only a phone call away should you need to speak to a professional in the industry. Just be aware that there are some agencies that promise all sort of things and rarely – if ever – have any intention of delivering even the basics. So, be aware, and beware. Do your research and listen to your gut.

Looking to hire models?

Newcomers can help themselves. Practice modelling poses, but don’t force it. Be natural and take your time to be truly comfortable in front of others. Have the confidence that as each day passes, you’ll be one step closer to securing work.

Confidence – it’s that word again. It really is key. Any client can ask models to repeat certain poses or to relay dialogue into a camera, and that’s expected. But models can naturally grow in confidence, and clients appreciate self-assurance in all forms.

Models need to handle rejection, and to “come back stronger”. Every artist will be rejected at least once, whether they are an actor, musician, writer or model. It’s normal. Remember that it’s nothing that can’t be rectified in future attempts. Click here for more attributes every model must have. They’ll hold you in good stead.

A personal portfolio is extremely helpful. We give all our models their own portfolio log-in details, and all information and photos contained in them must be kept up-to-date and relevant. It’s in your strongest interest to keep them fresh.

When you register with any agency, follow their guidelines accurately. We ask any newcomers to submit two clear photos along with their personal details and contact information.

We look forward to telling you that you have your first modelling assignment under your belt. In the meantime, stick to the above fundamentals, and keep looking to improve. You’ll get there in the end.
